What types of Blackjack are there available online?

Blackjack

There are few card games as classic or well-known as Blackjack. It’s a staple of both land-based and online casinos for good reason, especially with plenty of different variations of the game available to choose from.

Let’s take a closer look at what different formats of Blackjack are available online, from classic Blackjack or Spanish 21 to All Bets Blackjack.

Classic Blackjack

Of course, classic Blackjack is right at the top of the list. These games stick to the traditional format with no extra twists or rule changes.

In classic Blackjack players aim to get a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer, without ever overshooting that number. Players are dealt two cards at the start of the game, with the dealer receiving one face up card and one face down card.

On a player’s turn, they can choose to hit (taking an extra card), stand (keeping their hand as it is), double down (doubling their wager to take exactly one extra card) or split (if their two initial cards were the same value).

European Blackjack

The European variant of Blackjack works much the same as the classic one. But there are a couple of major differences that set this apart from the game’s more standard variety.

Most notably, the dealer only receives one card at the start of the game. Their second card is only drawn after all players have made their decisions. This means that nobody will know if the dealer will land a Blackjack until the end of the game.

Plus, players are only allowed to double down on initial hands valued at nine, ten or 11.

Spanish 21

This Blackjack variant changes up the composition of the decks, with all the tens removed from play. That means a single deck only features 48 cards rather than 52, shifting the odds.

But the game compensates for that shift in the odds by offering additional rules that balance things out for players. These include the ability to double down on any number of cards, re-splitting of Aces and late surrender

Blackjack Switch

Unlike other Blackjack varieties, Blackjack Switch sees players playing two hands simultaneously. This is similar to the experience of splitting, but from the start of the game instead.

Plus, players are allowed to switch the top cards between their two hands, changing up the gameplay formula and introducing an extra layer of decision-making.

All Bets Blackjack

This particular variety of Blackjack sticks closely to the formula of classic Blackjack. What sets it apart is the fact that it allows a selection of side bets, including perfect pairs, top 3 and 21+3.

As other Blackjack variants offer a smaller selection of side bets, this gives players a wider range of wagers to choose from at the start of the game. It also means that players can still receive a payout even if the dealer’s hand is closer to 21 than theirs. And there are still other online Blackjack varieties that we didn’t have the space to mention.
